Gandolf's 'Mortal Wound'

Our terrier, Gandolf, is a highly emotional dog. Though I realize dogs don't technically have emotions on the level of humans, I'm convinced he is highly tuned in to my feelings and takes these upon his very being. Yesterday, while heading into the dog park, he and Chablis, our yellow lab, decided that they weren't happy with each other at all and got into a pretty serious dog fight. While these two do play rough a good portion of the time, this was not play, but a real fight. I didn't think much about it at the time, but when I got home, I realized that Gandolf had a pretty bad injury from the squabble.

He pretty well spent the evening not wanting to walk or move, not eat any food or drink any liquids, or even go outside to the bathroom. Though he is a highly dramatic dog, I think he was pretty badly hurt. Unfortunately, there wasn't much we could do except clean the wound and keep an eye on it. Chablis wanted to help out with this as well, apparently.

She felt the need to sniff the wound, and attempt to lick it (though G wasn't having this at all) throughout the evening. Gandolf also felt the need to lick the wounds for himself.

Today, however, he seems to be back to himself. He has spent the majority of the day napping, but is definitely walking much better and doesn't seem to be obsessing about the wound. I can only hope that this little park incident was a one time thing, and because I've not seen them behave this way in the past, I can only assume that one or both were just having an off day.

  1. Oh poor little guy! Glad to hear that he seems to be feeling better. We previously had 2 greyhounds with our current dog (unfortunately lost them both a few years ago when they were almost 14). One of the greyhounds didn't get along with our mixed breed and we had to constantly watch them - they got into some squabbles also, but luckily most were very minor.

  2. I'm so sorry that you lost two of your dogs, and close together. It's always so sad when they go.

I think this was so odd because they normally don't fight. The Terrier is a bit of a stinker, but our Lab is pretty happy go lucky, so it surprised me to see her turn so quickly. We'll definitely keep an eye on them, but I still hope that it was just a one time spat.
